About

Wiretapper examines how effectively Australia’s major political parties use new media, particularly in the lead up to the 2007 Federal election.

Whatever they post, ‘tube, ’space or blog, Wiretapper will bring together social, media and technological analysis and discuss it.

Wiretapper is not aligned to any political party, but seeks to examine the issues resulting from political parties beginning to use new media. Wiretapper defines new media as any of: Webcasting; Email updates, RSS; Video on demand; Social networking; Profiling and Blogging. There are endless permeations of new technologies, many limited only by imagination and resources. For the purposes of Wiretapper, any use of something beyond TV, print and radio is worthy of study.

Wiretapper is also interested to see if there are parallels between the issues faced by political parties in using social media and those faced by corporate organisations.

Wiretapper is a final year project for Fiona Simpson, a student of the Bachelor of Communication (Public Relations), RMIT University, Melbourne.
